Tunable Pseudocapacitive Intercalation of Chloroaluminate Anions into Graphite Electrodes for Rechargeable Aluminum Batteries

چکیده
Rechargeable aluminum-graphite batteries using chloroaluminate-containing electrolytes have been the focus of significant research, particularly due to their high-rate capabilities. Engineered graphite electrodes shown exhibit supercapacitor-like rate performance, despite fact they store charge via electrochemical intercalation polyatomic AlCl 4 ? anions. However, origins such capabilities are not well understood. Here, techniques, we disentangle quantitatively diffusion-limited Faradaic, pseudocapacitive, and capacitive contributions storage, revealing that anions intercalate into with pseudocapacitive characteristics low ion diffusion limitations. Pristine mildly exfoliated graphites compared, where exfoliation resulted in significantly higher at highest potential redox pair as galvanostatic capacity retention faster discharge rates. The relationships between structure, mass transport, overall discussed. Ion within electrolyte phase porous electrode is play a key role controlling potentials rates, which can be enhanced by reducing tortuosity. results establish chloroaluminate anion exhibits non-diffusion-limited tunable modifying structure.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with higher energy density are very necessary to meet the increasing demand for devices with better performance. With the commercial success of lithiated graphite, other graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) have also been intensively reported, not only for LIBs, but also for other metal (Na, K, Al) ion batteries. In this Progress Report, we briefly review the app...

Structure and composition of an 11 nm thick amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film anode, capped with 4 nm of alumina are measured, in operando, by neutron reflectivity (NR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a lithium half-cell. NR data are analyzed to quantify the a-Si thickness and composition at various states of charge over six cycles. The a-Si anode expands and contracts upon lithi...
